Crews have been working all week, on top of Winter Storm Fern to remedy a collapsed pipe along the Potomac River. Despite their efforts, hundreds of millions of gallons of sewage have been released into the water system.

DC Water representatives emphasize that drinking water is safe (check the map I made for reference) but that isn’t the whole story. The collapse was only a few miles away from disrupting the entire region’s water supply.

The Potomac Riverkeeper called it:

…one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen in 25 years as a Riverkeeper.
